Recovering from hip surgery and residing in a retirement village , the place feels more like a prison than a paradise. As a sharp-witted older gay man, he feels little patience for outside interference. Choosing a closeted existence over standing up for his rights. That is until outspoken carer Jay J Samuels crashes into his world. What begins as a battle of wills quickly becomes an unexpected friendship. Jay J’s warmth, humour, and refusal to be intimidated slowly draws Dennis out from behind years of grief and secrecy. XQUENDA is the story about a young indigenous woman from rural Oaxaca, Mexico, and her search for justice after the disappearance and murder of her best friend, as no one seems to care due to their social and economic conditions. Her protest is through her Poems. Her weapon is her Words. Through letters written while she's protesting, we get to know her life, her traditions and culture, the magical realism that is the heart of her town, and her love and connection with her ancestors, specially with her Ñaa (Mum) and Abuela (Grand mother), and with the nature of the world that surrounds her, that although beautiful, not necessarily fair for women. But most important, we get to know the voices that like hers, weren't listen and were lost in time. Xquenda, is a word in ancient Zapotec which means "Soul" referring to the true self of a person, and what remains on earth after death. Accompanied by live music and recorded tracks with traditional mexican and Latin American rhythms, the piece is performed in English, with slang and songs in Spanish, and Zapotec languages. Abigail is a one-act monologue play by Nelma Vapaa-Jää that reimagines the relationship between Abigail Williams and John Proctor from Arthur Miller's The Crucible. The play offers a raw and unflinching exploration of Abigail's inner world. Through a series of confessions, reflections, and justifications, Abigail confronts the complex emotions and traumatic experiences that shaped her actions during the Salem witch trials. The play delves deep into themes of power, fear, love, and sexual assault, challenging both historical and contemporary perceptions of victims and perpetrators. Abigail invites the audience to reconsider how stories of sexual violence are told and understood, both in the past and today. The play highlights the ongoing struggle for victims to have their voices heard and their pain acknowledged in a world that often prefers to dismiss or vilify them. Nelma Vapaa-Jää, the creator and performer of Abigail, is a 28-year-old actor from Finland. Nelma graduated from the MFA Acting International course from East 15 Acting School in 2024. She is currently based in London and representing herself. She wants to create art that touches you and makes you think. Finland has a strong theater tradition and there are 73 professional theaters in Finland. Nelma draws from both Finnish and English traditions when creating theatre.

Bastards, a new historical drama, explores the fractured bond between America’s most revered Shakespearean actor, Edwin Booth, and his infamous brother, President Lincoln’s assassin, John Wilkes Booth. On New Year’s Day, 1892, a dying Edwin attempts a séance to contact his late wife - but accidentally conjures Wilkes. Trapped together, the estranged brothers are forced to relive their shared past: a childhood marked by violence, illegitimacy, and the weight of their father’s theatrical legacy; a bitter rivalry forged onstage and off; and the ideological divide that changed the course of American history. As the past and present collide, Wilkes delights in dismantling Edwin’s legacy, while Edwin struggles to separate the brother he loved from the killer he became. But as the séance spirals further out of control, it becomes clear that this is no simple haunting - it is a reckoning. In Bastards, legacy isn’t given. It’s inherited, contested, and impossible to escape.

Killjoy Theatre is proud to present Russian Roulette, a deeply personal, abstract depiction of eating disorders and their relationship to systemic misogyny.
