Skin, Face, and the Space Between

Have you ever worn "a perfect mask" just to fit in? What happens to our bodies when that mask starts to fold? In Skin, Face, and the Space Between, Chianing Tu presents a visceral inquiry into the physiology of "face"—often referred as mianzi in Mandarin - a complex sociological concept in Asian society, representing prestige, dignity, and reputation, operating as a vital social currency. Moving between cultural expectations and the liminal experience of living between East and West, this somatic and contemporary performance explores how social pressure shapes the anatomy of our presence. Through 30 minutes of rich movement followed by a 15-minute facilitated interaction, Chianing invites the audience to observe the moments where the body folds, unpacks, navigates, and eventually finds its re-alignment. This is more than a dance; it is a research-based ritual of reclaiming one's value within the space between cultures.
